Powhiri

At the College of Education, we welcome new students to their studies and our community of learning with a pōwhiri. The pōwhiri is a traditional Māori welcome ceremony. It usually takes place when going onto a marae, however pōwhiri are also held at other places.

The purpose of the pōwhiri is to remove the tapu of the Manuhiri (visitors) to make them one with the Tangata Whenua (Home people). It is a gradual process of the Manuhiri and the Tangata Whenua coming together.

Please arrive at the appointed time for the pōwhiri, so that the process can be explained and there will be time to practice the waiata (song) that the Manuhiri will sing to support their speaker.

This is a formal process, so please ensure that all electronic equipment (cellphone/ipod etc) is turned off during the entire pōwhiri.

Recommended attire:

Women: a modest skirt for the pōwhiri, or tidy semi-formal attire (no shorts, short skirts, revealing tops etc)
Men: long pants, neat dress
