Academic and cultural support services have been designed to ensure that you get the most out of both your studies and your free time. UC has a well-established research centre that is dedicated to Pacific Studies – the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies.
Katinia Makaafi, the Pacific Education Support Coordinator, is available to assist students from 9.30 to 3.30 Monday - Thursday in Te Pourewa 312. You can contact her on 364-2987 ext 44629 or katinia.makaafi@canterbury.ac.nz.
Katinia provides pastoral care, advice and support to on campus and distance students studying at the College of Education. She advocates and liaises with departments on behalf of students as required. She also organises student gatherings, activities and information workshops throughout the year. Any study related concerns or queries please drop in, email or phone Katinia on the above contact details.
UC provide a number of support services for all Pacific students, including mentoring and the PASS Programme.
Pacific Cultural Support is also available from the Samoan Students' Association, Fijian Students' Association and Tongan Students' Association.
There is a Pacific students forum on Blackboard called "Pacific Student Network". The forum has information about the Pacific Support Team, student discussion forums and announcements.
The Pacific room is located at the Te Pourewa building level 3, Room 312, College of Education. It is available for Pacific students studying teacher education. It is a place to study and relax with friends. Resources available in this room are:

The guide for Pacific Students is now available to download. It contains advice and information about support services and programmes, cultural support, accommodation, facilities for Pacific students, qualifications and courses, financial support and entry requirements.
For College of Education students there are a range of scholarships available.
A number of UC Pacific scholarships are also available.
A range of Pacific activities and events are organised during the year. At the start of the academic year our new students are invited to an afternoon tea to welcome them to the College. Several key staff members attend and also some of our continuing Pacific students. The culmination of the academic year is the Pacific Ed’s Evening held towards the end of the year. In this special occasion, Pacific students can celebrate their success with their families and friends, and with the wider Pacific Island community. Entertainments from students, Pacific food, guest-speakers from staff and Pacific community/school are all part of this social event.
There will be tutorial workshops organised at the beginning and end of each semester for students who need extra academic assistance with their writing skills, time management and other needed skills. All students especially with English as their second language are encouraged to attend these workshops. Dates for these workshops-To be advised. Events organised for all UC Pacific Students include the Induction for first-year Pacific students in February each year, the UC Pasifika Welcome as well as 'Jandals' social events and end of year picnic.
