Bachelor of Teaching and Learning with Honours

Overview

The BTchLn(Hons) is a one-year full-time postgraduate qualification for Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) graduates. It develops knowledge and research skills to equip you for further study and improve your classroom/centre practice, provides you with the opportunity to focus on educational issues or curriculum areas in which you have special interests and makes you more competitive in the job market.

What are the advantages of doing a fourth Honours year?

  • It will develop knowledge and research skills that will equip you for further study and improve your classroom/centre practice
  • It will provide you with the opportunity to focus on educational issues or curriculum areas in which you have special interests
  • It will provide a fourth year of tertiary education which is the norm for teachers in most countries e.g. Australia, Great Britain, USA, and Canada
  • It will make you more competitive in the job market
  • You can cross-credit your courses to Master of Teaching and Learning or Master of Education
  • Eligibility for recovery of some research costs
  • Access to databases and other research facilities
  • Mentoring by researchers with strengths in teaching and learning
  • The introduction of a four year degree for teaching is currently being considered
  • You move from the Q3 to the Q3+ step on the salary scale.

Who can enrol?

Students who have gained a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) with a B grade average in their 200 and 300 Level courses and met the standard required for a passing grade in all professional studies and professional practice courses at 100, 200 and 300 levels.

What courses do I have to do?

You will need to complete four 30 credit courses.

  • One compulsory research course, which includes a research project

  • One compulsory teaching and learning course, which includes a school/centre research component

  • One course from the Master of Teaching and Learning
    • EDTL811 Critical Reflection on Theories and Practices of Teaching and Learning
    • EDTL814 Re/visioning Assessment
    • EDTL852 Challenging Behaviours: Positive and Effective Management
    • EDTL872 Special Topic: Issues in Literacy and Numeracy in Schools
    • EDTL875 Independent Study
    • EDTL891 Information and Communication Technology in the Teaching and Learning Process
  • One course from the Master of Education
    • EDUC602Comparative Education (Social Class and Education)
    • EDUC603Policy Studies in Education
    • EDUC612Disorders of Childhood
    • EDUC613Genders and Sexualities in Education
    • EDUC616Applied Developmental and Paediatric Psychology
    • EDUC617Education and Development in the Pacific

How much work does this involve?

Courses are normally of one year duration and each involves approximately 300 hours of study of which approximately 50 hours is face to face contact.

Can I study part-time?

Yes. Both full-time and part-time options are available. The two compulsory courses, EDTL828 and EDUC659 must be completed in the first year. The degree must be completed within three years.

Do I have time in Schools/Centres?

You will undertake a major research project and other course based research in schools/centres: Approximately 120 hours.

When will the lectures be?

19 February - 9 November

What time of day?

This will depend on the courses you choose.

  • In general, the two optional courses will be in the evening or 'school holiday' periods
  • One compulsory course is likely to be in the early afternoon and one in the early evening
  • Between 8.30 and 3.30 when on the research practicum in schools/centres.

Are there classes of Honours?

Yes. The degree may be awarded with First Class Honours, Second Class Honours or Third Class Honours.

Are scholarships available?

Two scholarships for Academic Excellence are being offered.
