Children's Literature

Certificate in Children's Literature (CertChLit)

What is the Programme?

The Certificate in Children's Literature is a distance education (by correspondence) qualification taking at least 700 hours of actual study time.

The programme is planned for parents as well as teachers and librarians. It is designed to help the learner know about the field of literature.

The student receives study guide materials at the commencement of the course and is allocated his/her own personal tutor.

What are the Courses of Study?

Each course would require a minimum of 175 hours of study time. Study time does not include reading the literature itself.

Core Compulsory Programme

This programme ensures that you have the knowledge and skills that are considered to be the foundation for an academic study of children's literature.

  • EDCL711 Image and Narrative
  • EDCL712 Story and Meaning: a study of myth, legend and folktale
  • EDCL713 Patterns of Language

Plus one other course from

  • EDCL714 Research in Children's Literature
  • EDCL721 The Victorian period in Children's Literature
  • EDCL722 Genre in Children's Literature: an introduction
  • EDCL723 Fantasy in Children's Literature
  • EDCL724 Realistic Fiction: Social Realism in Contemporary Children's and Young Adult Fiction
  • EDCL725 The Multicultural Experience of Children's Literature
  • EDCL726 The New Zeland Experience: a study of Contemporary New Zealand Literature for Children
  • EDCL727 Young Adult Fiction

Optional courses are offered in alternate years. Odd numbered courses are offered in odd numbered years and even numbered courses are offered in even numbered years.
