The Diploma in Children's Literature was developed by the College and the first courses were offered in 1992. The course is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act (1989), and the University of Canterbury College of Education is accredited to offer it. It is an open entry qualification. All courses are able to be credited towards the BTchLn (Upgrade) degree and are Level 7 (C Schedule).
It is a requirement of the qualification that the compulsory courses are a pre-requisite for the optional courses. However, at the Co-ordinator's discretion, EDCL714 may be undertaken after the commencement of the optional programme. All courses are delivered by distance education.
For a person to graduate with the DipChLit, they would be required to complete seven courses as follows.
The Diploma in Children's Literature programme is made up of two sections:
1. Four Core Courses (compulsory)
2. Three Optional Courses
The optional section is made up of two levels, with two courses chosen from Level One and one course chosen from Level Two.
Level One: A Knowledge of the Literature
Level Two: Developing a Practicum
Optional courses are offered in alternate years. Odd numbered courses are offered in odd numbered years and even numbered courses are offered in even numbered years.
