Introduction

Child readingOur Children's Literature courses were developed in response to a challenge by Margaret Mahy that there needed to be a more substantial academic study of the field of children's literature. The qualifications are designed to be open entry courses. A children's librarian should be able to believe that the course will meet his/her needs as much as a parent, a writer, a publisher and a teacher. As such, individual courses are tailored to:

  • the needs of those new to tertiary education, as well as those who are more experienced
  • the needs of students in distance education
  • the needs of a variety of professional and non professional clients.

Children's Literature staff firmly believe that knowledge and skills in children's literature should not be the preserve of a professional few but should be available to empower all who have an interest in the field. All activities undertaken by Children's Literature staff are designed to enhance children's and young people's experience of the power of story in their lives through enabling adults to be knowledgeable and skilful in making and/or sharing children's and young people's literature.
