Clinical Teaching

Clinical teaching, educational supervision and clinical supervision in a health care context are emerging as separate fields of inquiry with recognised processes, skills and theory. These qualifications are aimed at the health professions working in a range of health care settings, both hospitals and the community.

Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching

Who is it designed for?
  1. Health professionals who maintain a clinical practice focus to their work but take on the responsibility of supervising students, novice practitioners and other staff in health care settings.
  2. Clinical supervisors who have an educational co-ordination responsibility. Educational institute based or appointed clinical tutors. In-service educators and staff development personnel.
Pre-Requisites
Participants are required to have:
  1. Qualifications and experience which accord with membership of an approved health professional association, or be registered to practise.
  2. Be employed in an approved clinical role which encompasses a minimum of four hours per week contact with students or junior colleagues during the block of study for Courses 2 & 3 (or some equivalent exposure to learners, e.g. field work students on block).
Credit for Prior Learning for Course One

If you have undertaken other training in this area, or believe you have acquired Unit One skills from work experience, you may enter a process to have those skills recognised and credited. You can then proceed to Unit Two or Three via a three hour bridging seminar.

Courses

The Certificate consists of four courses. Each course is a stand-alone, modular course so participants can exit at any point and undertake the complete Certificate in their own time frame.

The qualification is delivered in collaboration with local District Health Boards and regional education providers throughout New Zealand.

Participants are required to have either:

  1. qualified for a degree in a New Zealand university which is of relevance to clinical teaching and the proposed course of study, or
