Master of Teaching and Learning

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the qualification designed for?

This degree has been specifically developed for educators in all education settings; early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, public and private. One of the strengths of the degree is the variety of expertise and experience of our students.

Why this Masters degree?

The Master of Teaching and Learning enables teachers to build upon their bachelors degree or Advanced Diploma in Teaching. It aims to help teachers become critical and reflective in their thinking, better able to conduct and apply independent research, and able to assume greater leadership in their institution's professional growth - all for the ultimate benefit of learners.

Are there incentives or scholarships to help me with my study?

There are a range of incentives or scholarships available although they may vary from year to year. Contact bridget.oregan@canterbury.ac.nz for scholarships that might relate to your circumstances.

Can the Master of Teaching and Learning courses be credited to other Master's qualifications?

The Masters of Education may include two courses from the MTchLn schedule.

How much time do I need to set aside for my study?

Each MTchLn or PGDipTchLn course will require approximately 300 hours. As a guideline you should expect to spend 10 hours per week over 30 weeks for each course.

I have a BTchLn(Hons). Can I continue with the MTchLn?

Your BTchLn(Hons) should leave you with only four MTchLn courses (probably a thesis) to complete. Each case, however, should be discussed with either the MTchLn Coordinator susan.lovett@canterbury.ac.nz or bridget.oregan@canterbury.ac.nz.

I have an Advanced Diploma in Teaching and I would like to upgrade it to the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning degree - what are my options?

You have two options.

  1. You could enrol in this master's degree immediately. When you have completed the core course (EDTL801) and any other course from the MTchLn schedule then you will qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning degree. You will have only six courses to complete to gain the MTchLn.
  2. You could enrol for the two Advanced Studies for Teachers upgrade courses (EDTL746 and EDTL747) and be awarded a BTchLn. If you then decide to continue within the master's programme, you will have eight courses to complete.

I have not done any academic work for a long time. Is there any kind of course I can take to help me get back into this kind of study?

Learning Skills Centre
The Learning Skills Centre is located in the Education library and on level 7 of the Central Library.

The staff are available for individual consultations and also offer group seminars, lectures and practical workshops. There is a full list of the assistance available on the Learning Skills Centre website.

If I complete the PGDipTchLn but then want to continue with my MTchLn, what happens?

This is possible. You will need to discuss your options with either the MTchLn Coordinator susan.lovett@canterbury.ac.nz or bridget.oregan@canterbury.ac.nz.

Is it NZQA approved?

This degree is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and the University of Canterbury College of Education is accredited to offer it.

When do enrolments close?

We would prefer enrolments four weeks before a course commences but late enrolments will be considered if places are available at the discretion of the course co-ordinator.
