We provide courses which lead to the following qualifications.
The Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (BTchLn) is an NZQA-approved Bachelor's degree and is rated as Q3 for salary purposes. To graduate with a BTchLn (Early Childhood) or (Primary) you need:
Other education or curriculum subject courses at level 6 or 7 may be able to be credited.
Note:
Applicants for the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning via Upgrade will need to supply verified copies of both their diploma of teaching and transcripts from the granting institution.
The BTchLn(Hons) is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time postgraduate qualification for Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) graduates. It develops knowledge and research skills to equip you for further study and improve your classroom/centre practice, provides you with the opportunity to focus on educational issues or curriculum areas in which you have special interests and makes you more competitive in the job market.
Up until 1998 the initial qualification received when a teacher graduated from a College of Education, was the Diploma in Teaching (DipT). After completing seven papers from the approved schedules of higher qualification courses, with no more than three from Level 5 (formerly Schedule A), a teacher can be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Studies (formerly the Higher Diploma in Teaching) and enters Qualification Group Two.
The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Studies is not open for new enrolments.
Four courses make up most of the Aperfield Montessori Diploma in Early Childhood Education. The Aperfield Montessori Trust teaches these four courses in conjunction with the College of Education and they can be credited towards the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning Upgrade. Students who have completed the four Montessori AST papers and wish to qualify for the Aperfield Montessori Diploma will be required to do additional study and sit a three hour written examination at an additional cost payable at the Aperfield Montessori Trust.
The Graduate Certificate in Management in Early Childhood Education is for managers working in early childhood settings. It comprises four compulsory courses which may also be used towards the BTchLn via Upgrade. Candidates must normally have a teaching diploma or degree. Full-time and part-time options are available.
The Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages comprises four courses studied by distance and is normally completed on a part-time basis over two years. These courses may also be used towards the BTchLn via Upgrade. Candidates must normally have a teaching diploma or degree.
The Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education is a four-course, NZQA-approved certificate course for those with a Diploma in Teaching or a teaching bachelor’s degee. (The individual courses are available to those who are studying for the BTchLn via the upgrade pathway). There are three core courses:
There is one optional course which can be chosen from a wide range of curriculum courses.
Further information on studying gifted education is also available.
All courses are designated Level 5, 6 or 7 (formerly Schedule A, Schedule B and Schedule C).
Level 5 courses (formerly Schedule A) are equivalent to the basic requirements of pre-service Diploma in Teaching programmes but are designed for practising teachers. They include courses that will update professional abilities to a basic level in areas where there have been substantial changes since the teacher completed pre-service education, or where the individual did not receive instruction.
Level 6 courses (formerly Schedule B) provide opportunities for teachers to broaden their professional knowledge, and begin or advance specialist study by focussing on new developments and recent research in teaching, thereby promoting reflective classroom practices.
Level 7 courses (formerly Schedule C) are generally more intensive and specialised than Schedule A and B courses. They are designed to be either more demanding in the range of experiences, skills and concepts, or extend the learnings from a previous course. They may involve study in greater depth, require more independent inquiry and research, and promote reflective practice in more specialised professional roles. They may require relevant experience or application in a specified field prior to enrolment.
