Secondary Teacher Education

Well-qualified, enthusiastic teachers are always sought after. From time to time there are more opportunities in some teaching sectors than others - for instance, Secondary teachers of chemistry, home economics, mathematics, physics, technology and te reo Māori are in particular demand.  There is an ongoing need for experienced, well-qualified teachers in all subjects and middle and senior managers.

We offer the Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning and Bachelor of Education (Physical Education).

Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Secondary)

The GradDipTchLn(Secondary) is a one-year postgraduate course comprising courses totalling 120 credits for those who hold a University degree. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning programme is currently offered at our Ilam campus in Christchurch as well as

Bachelor of Education (Physical Education)

  • The BEd(PE) is a four year full-time conjoint programme (or equivalent) leading to a Bachelor of Education degree and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning. Secondary courses provide a specialisation in Physical Education.

Scholarships

UC and the College of Education offer a number of scholarships for students. For more information visit our Scholarships.

TEACHNZ offer a wide range of Scholarships and other Financial Incentives for teacher trainees in certain subjects (these have recently included chemistry, home economics, mathematics, physics, technology and te reo Māori). Retraining

Part-time courses designed to provide an opportunity for ex-secondary teachers to re-enter the profession equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources to be successful in the context of the current New Zealand Secondary School classroom. The course has a strong emphasis on updating participants in their curriculum areas. It also focuses on classroom management and ICT skills for teaching. There is one module which is targeted specifically at experienced teachers who have trained overseas. The course is funded by the Ministry of Education and there are no direct costs for participants.
